Custom Paint: When & What to Paint

If you are like many owners of classic, vintage cars, then you did not choose your vehicle's paint color. That's because most of these cars come to their owners through second-hand purchases. It's very rare that we meet owners who have the original bill of sale from when the vehicle first rolled off the dealer lot. As such, you might not be fully in love with the color of your car or maybe you're just wondering what else can be done with it. The following is a quick look at when to order a custom paint job and what types of custom auto painting you have to choose from:

To Paint or Not to Paint

Our team generally recommends against changing the color on any rare or vintage vehicle if it has a hue that is part of what makes it unique. For example, if you have a rare raven black 271 horsepower K-Code 289, then you want to enhance that custom paint and color and not change it. This is key to both aesthetics and ensuring your coveted collectible retains its high value. On the other hand, if you have a vintage (but not extra rare) Ford Mustang, then we encourage you to make it yours with a fresh and unique body color that will really capture attention.

Special Types of Custom Automotive Painting

  • Fade. Fade jobs consist of using two different colors starting at opposite sides of the vehicle -- typically front and rear or top and bottom -- and having them blend together at the central meeting point. A good fade job accentuates the vehicle's physical appearance without the colors or their blending looking too abrupt.
  • Pinstriping. Pinstriping, also known as line art, is an artistic expression that has been used on vehicles since the horsedrawn carriage days. These lines accentuate the vehicle's body and give a vehicle a truly unique look. Generally, we do pinstriping in two colors. One to compliment the car's body color and one to contrast the first pinstripe color.
  • Racing Stripes. Similar but much more pronounced then pinstriping, good racing stripes are an art form best reserved for hot rods and muscle cars. For this, we'll do several mock-ups to ensure you get that ideal look you have in your head.
  • Metallic Paint. A metallic custom paint job is a special type of automotive paint that is ideal for hot rods and similar sports-oriented vehicles. This type of custom paint job uses metallic flecks that give the vehicle a special glimmer and sparkling in different lighting conditions. In addition to giving a vehicle a unique look, metallic paint is great for hiding minor scratches and dings . It also holds up better over time with less fading.
