SEMA News & Our '50 Merc
Over the last couple of months, we've written about SEMA, AutoRama, and the benefits of going to such classic car shows, in order to get inspiration and network. Well, this restored 1949 Mercury was one such vehicle that surely inspired us after its display at this past SEMA. We love it due to it not only being one of our favorite makes and generational models but also because of the unique way in which it combines the best elements of traditional and modern craftsmanship.
The Third Generation of Mercs at Customs & Hot Rods of Andice
Here at Customs & Hot Rods of Andice, we haven't started working with electric, yet, but we do have plenty of experience stripping down and rebuilding the classic beauties that are third generation Mercs. The third generation of Mercury Eights was introduced in 1949 and continued on until 1951. This generation of Mercs featured more of the ponton or pontoon styling of cars in which the all-enveloping bodywork is markedly bulbous and slab-sided.
This '50 Merc was in fairly good condition when first found and still boasted many of its factory-original bodywork, including original suicide rear doors. Still, more could be done! The model was completely disassembled and reassembled with a full mechanical update, new upholstery work, and an all in-house paint job to really make the end result pop on the floor and the road.
Where that four-door '50 Merc prioritized comfort and styling, the next '50 Merc our CHRA shop took on was entitled the '50 Monster Merc -- and for good reason! This fully customized 1950 Mercury coupe received an aggressive 4-inch chop, altered wheelbase, and one-of-a-kind toothy Desota grill. Under the hood, it's getting a 632c.i. twin turbo Nelson Racing Engines-built Big Block Chevy. This beast of an engine will enable the classic car to churn out upwards of 3,000 horsepower.
