Rare Muscle Cars that Make Us Swoon
Oh, the American muscle car -- how we love thee! Muscle cars are true racing machines that perform well above your average sedan and just a touch below a full-on sports car, although some muscle cars can put a few so-called sports cars to shame on the open road. Since the muscle car is loosely defined as any two-door vehicle with an engine designed for high-performance driving, the category gets crowded -- just about any coupe could technically become a muscle car. Here a few rare muscle cars that our team here at Customs & Hot Rods of Andice believes define the category:
3 Rare Muscle Cars That Will Always Make Us Look Twice
- 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88: An incredibly rare muscle car, there are only 20 of these in existence. Chevrolet released this model to demonstrate its performance capability on the track. Underneath its hood, it features the ultimate in Corvette engines, with 12.5:1 compression, hi-lift cam, and a 850cfm four-barrel carburetor rated at 560 horsepower. This vehicle was so fast and powerful that Chevrolet had to add a heavy-duty suspension and power brakes so that the Corvette L88 could be driven safely. While we sadly haven't come across this model in our shop, we have had the privilege to work on this stunning '68 Corvette with an LS7 and T-56 transmission.
- 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX. We don't know what it was about 1967, but some amazing vehicles were produced that year, including our next favorite rare muscle car: the Belvedere GTX. This model is known among enthusiasts as the 'gentleman's muscle car' thanks to its balance of style and performance. Original versions of this rare muscle car included a fortified 375 bhp 440-cid V-8 engine called the Super Commando 440. But its interior outfitting really earned the Belvedere GTX its nickname. The car featured a top-of-the-line interior with sporty bucket seats, embossed vinyl, and brightwork has inspired much of our own custom work here at CHRA.
- 1966 Dodge Coronet. The Coronet Line was originally introduced in 1949 and underwent several stature, performance, and interior changes in the years that followed. It wasn't until 1966 that this model underwent the transformation it needed to become a true muscle car. Along with a major redesign, the 1966 Dodge Coronet packed a 440-cid V8 engine with a 426-cid Hemi option. An incredible performance vehicle, it's also one of the most rare: there are just 21 in the world!
