A Rare Beauty: The Nash Woodie Classic Car
There are rare cars and then there is the Nash Suburban. The Nash Suburban is a wonderful example of a much beloved and collectible woodie classic car. A woodie classic car gets that name, 'woodie', because they featured rear car bodywork that was constructed partially or completely of wood. Typically woodies were station wagons, although there are some examples of woodie sedans and convertibles. The Nash Woodie Suburban is an excellent example of all that's to love about this body style.
A Rare Beauty: The Nash Woodie Classic Car
The Nash Motors Company was a short lived American automobile manufacturer that was based out of Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was founded by Charles W. Nash, who was previously a president of General Motors. Nash was an innovative leader and with his guidance, the Nash Motors Company went on to create some gorgeous and fantastic models, including the Nash Suburban.
The Nash Suburban was introduced in 1946 and production continued until 1948. This model was a wood-paneled, station wagon version of the Nash Motors Company's Ambassador model. This model featured high-quality ash framing that was complimented by mahogany paneling that was also supplied by a local wood processing plant. The designers behind the Nash Suburban wanted to introduce a higher-quality, more attractive luxury-oriented vehicle that would excel in the booming post-war marketplace.
In order to appeal to those consumers interested in a more unique and luxurious vehicle, the Nash Motors Company had to outfit it with a ton of features -- and outfit it they did! This model came equipped with some of the most innovative features of its day. This included a Weather-Eye heater, Cruising Gear overdrive, and a remote control Zenith radio.
However, while the Nash Suburban was a hit in its day, part of its appeal then and today was its rarity. This was a model that required a lot of hands-on construction and extensive detailing by skilled tradesmen. As such, only 1,000 examples of the model were constructed and sold between 1946 and 1948. Out of those 1,000, fewer than 20 have survived to this day. So if you happen upon one of these woodie classic car models, we absolutely recommend jumping on it and looking at restoration work. The Nash Suburban models that have survived the years now fetch into the six figures. So if you're looking for a rare and highly valuable vehicle, then this is it. Just note that you aren't the only one searching for it! Automotive collectors everywhere value this model.
