Maintenance After Your Rare Car Restoration

So you've undertaken that rare car restoration project you've always dreamed of and you have a gorgeous vehicle before you. Now what?

Here at Customs and Hot Rods of Andice, we focus on the before and during of rare car restoration -- but for our clients, the after is just as important. Maintenance is vital for preserving both the vehicle's value and your enjoyment of it. While the value of any given vehicle will first depend on its year, make, and model, the second thing potential buyers and industry insiders will look at is the condition. Check out the following rare car maintenance tips to get started:

Maintenance After Your Rare Car Restoration

  • Drive it. Don't hide your restored classic away after your rare car restoration is complete. Vehicles, like their owners, need exercise and movement to stay in prime condition. Everything from the engine to tire sidewalls will degrade if your restored rare car is not driven regularly. Driving your vehicle around at least twice a month will keep it in excellent operating condition, but keep in mind that your vintage car was build for different driving conditions, so be gentle around turns and on the highway.
  • Regular inspections. While our shop is located safely inland, many of our customers live close to the Gulf, where corrosion is a major threat. Regularly inspect your vehicle for signs of rust. If you see any of these signs, use a rust converter or remover along with touch-up paint as soon as you can. Always keep an eye out for any bolts or components that might seem to be loose.
  • Safe washing. Do not try to wash your car with a high-pressure hose or a mechanical car wash. Instead, use warm, soapy water and a sponge, followed by high-quality car wax.
  • Store inside and use windshield sun protectors. While we don't worry about corrosion in central Texas, we do worry about sun damage. Sun and heat can damage your rare car's finish, engine, and interior. The best way to avoid this damage is to store your car inside at all times. When out and about, park your vehicle in the shade and use a windshield sun shade to reduce damage to your dash and front seats. If you have leather upholstery, treating them with a quality leather conditioner will help avoid cracking and tearing.
