Have a Summer Car Project? The Swap Meet Lowdown
One thing we love about summer is all of the swap meets and car show events going on. This is an excellent time for those dreaming about hot rod restorations or classic car builds as just about every weekend there seems to be something going on. In another article this month, we noted some of the bigger swap meets going on but there will also be a ton of smaller ones in Texas and throughout the region. So if you're looking to get started on a summer car project, or you already have a summer car project underway, summer swap meets are going to be your best friend. But before you go, here's what you should know about to get the best finds:
Tips for Swap Meet and Summer Car Project Success
- Research, research, research. You know how if you go to the grocery store when you're hungry, you end up coming home with a lot less money and a lot more things then you really needed? Swap meets are sort of like that. It is important to do your research before going out so you have a plan of what to buy for your summer car project. Do research on your project and create a comprehensive list of part numbers you need and, if possible, even photos of the parts or components you're looking for. Bring cash with you to prevent being charged excessive on-site ATM fees and to limit yourself.
- Know how to recognize and price. Swap meets can get a bit overwhelming and there are quite a few vendors that are less than meticulous when it comes to labeling their items. Doing your research beforehand will not only help you stick with a plan, but it will also help you recognize what to look for when searching through similar looking pieces. Have an idea of the fair market value of the pieces you're looking for as this will be your biggest asset when negotiating a price. Note that some vendors will not negotiate and others may, in fact, refuse to sell if you lowball far too much.
- Have an exit plan. This is a two-parter. First, know how to walk away from a negotiation. If it pains you, ask for the vendor's card and contact information to sleep on the prospect. If you can't walk away or if you find yourself coming back and purchasing something from a vendor, make sure you have a way to get back to your vehicle or car. Sometimes, a sturdy box or backpack will work just fine. But if you have a long list or need some big pieces, then you should think about investing in a cart or folding wagon to roll behind you as you shop.
