The Hard Skills Necessary to Excel at Custom Body Work
How good a business is at providing any service or product largely relies upon how talented and skilled their employees are. At our Texas hot rod shop of Customs & Hot Rods of Andice, we know that all of the accolades and awards we've received over the years are almost entirely thanks to the outstanding staff we have here on site. From upholstery professionals to the most talented in custom body work technicians, we employ only the best and the most eager -- those who are willing to experiment and excel. And right now, we are taking in resumes, so if you've ever dreamt about being paid to work on some of this country's most beautiful hot rods and classic cars, now is the time to get started. Just wondering who it is that makes up our crew? You might find the following rundown of skills interesting.
The Hard Skills Necessary to Excel at Custom Body Work
- Product understanding. In order to make the right car repairs and restore classic cars and hot rods to spec, technicians need to have extensive knowledge of those vehicles' original structures. Of course, there's a difference between understanding modern cars and classic cars. Cars older than this millennium were comprised of less of plastics and more of different metals. Because of this, those with classic cars should go to a specialized mechanic and not your general auto body shop. General auto body shops may hire skilled and experienced technicians, but the vast majority of jobs they undertake are on newer vehicles and thus they don't have the working familiarity a shop such as ours has with the classics.
- Equipment knowledge. Understanding the vehicle you're working on is the first step. The second step is knowing what type of equipment is needed, and how to use it to best repair or restore a client's vehicle. Sometimes this means utilizing a state-of-the-art piece of machinery, and sometimes it relies on having an older, authentic specialty tool made for just a few models. Knowing the right tool is half the job and it's an important part of what we do here.
- Finishing expertise. Another big difference between general auto body shops and a specialty shop is how they approach finishing work. Big shops that operate on collision and general repairs are often looking at fast turnovers and standard paint jobs. What they don't often do is the specialty refinishing required for most restoration and customization jobs. At Customs & Hot Rods of Andice, we employ specialty upholstery and custom body work technicians who are experienced at completing the fine finishing touches required of vehicles striving to enter competitions.
