Checking Out Hot Rods - Austin TX: Checking Into Top Notch

Even if you've never stepped foot in Austin, you might recognize this burger stand drive-in from the 1993 Richard Linklater film Dazed and Confused. For residents of the Austin area, Top Notch is a local staple that serves up the best in hamburgers and fried chicken. And, for those of us who love all things gear-related, it also hosts one of the best monthly custom car groups in the U.S.

On the first Saturday of each month, Top Notch hosts Hot Rod Night from 6 to 10 (or more often, whenever everyone finally decides it's time to head home). Throughout the night, local car lovers drive on up in their pre-1971 classics, hot rods, and custom rebuilds to enjoy food, drink and shop talk. Generally, the restaurant will also screen a classic film that features some type of desirable car, and host live music.

While this monthly event is the most popular, it isn't the only time hot rod Austin TX hobbyists get together to see some great-looking vehicles and chat with other hobbyists and hot rod enthusiasts. Local car clubs gather at Top Notch just about every weekend, so if you're new to town or just passing through, we encourage you to make a stop at this local hangout to get a pulse on what's happening in the local vintage car scene.
