Browsing the Rare Car Gallery: The '62 Lincoln Convertible

A couple of weeks ago we released photos of the fresh 3" exhaust pipes CHRA crew member Ben welded for a '62 Lincoln Continental convertible we have in progress. Browsing back on these photos and seeing the transformation in the shop makes us nostalgic for the '62 Lincoln Continental up in our rare car gallery. The '62 Continental is getting a full slam treatment to give it a head-turning Presidential look complete with hub cap style solid wheels and straight paint job. It's a big transformation, but one well deserving of this unique model in our rare car gallery. Looking Into the Rare Car Gallery: The Lincoln Continental

The '62 Lincoln Continental is part of the fourth generation of Continentals that underwent three big model revisions with the first version being produced from 1961 to 1963. When the 1961 Lincoln Continental was first rolled out onto dealerships across the country, it was the very first car to be sold in the United States with a two-year/24,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty -- which was a testament to just how solidly the vehicle was built. In fact, the durability of these models has been well tested and even today versions can be rolled out from forgotten garages with little needed in terms of general maintenance. This has also led to it being a frequently sought-after model for automotive restorers looking for a reliable classic car project to undertake.

Exterior design and style was also something unique and notable about this generation of Continentals and why it continues to be such a desirable pick among automotive enthusiasts. This was the first model year to feature four doors and was offered both as a four-door sedan and four-door convertible. This larger style still boasted tidy dimensions and cleaning styling; two aspects which led it to win Car Life's 1961 Engineering Excellence Award and, uniquely, a bronze medal from the Industrial Design Institute, a group that seldom included automotive designs in its annual recognition awards.

While the 1961, 1962, and 1963 Lincoln Continentals are fairly similar without any major redesigns, there are a few exterior accents that make the 1962 Lincoln Continental particularly desirable and why we are proud to have it included in our rare car gallery. The most notable of this is the switch to a heavier gauge and high-mounted bumper more reminiscent of the Thunderbird.
