3 Parts You'll Need to Replace With an Authentic Restoration

An authentic restoration is no easy feat. To make a vintage car look grandagain, such as we did with the all-steel 1933 Roadster we recently took to Hot August Nights, requires a significant investment of time, work, and finances. But for us and many of our clients, the results are well worth the effort. For us, bringing a classic hot rod or vintage vehicle back to life at our authentic restoration shop is one of the best experiences and we enjoy utilizing as many authentic parts as possible, repairing what we can. But whether you choose to go through us or you're trying to tackle some of the steps of the restoration process on your own, there are some things that cannot be repaired. The following is a look at 3 parts you should plan on replacing whenever you're looking to restore a classic car or truck:

3 Parts You'll Need to Replace When Doing Vehicle Work, Even With an Authentic Restoration

  • Universal joints. Universal joints, also known as u-joints, on classic cars and trucks that are twenty years or older will almost always need replacement. These components simply get a lot of wear and, due to their location, often get dirt and road debris kicked up and packed into the joints. This can often lead to unwanted play, which can impact the safety of a vehicle. As such, this part is almost always on the replacement list when undertaking a restoration job.
  • Ball joints. As with u-joints, ball joints take a ton of beating and if you are restoring a vehicle, or even repairing an older non-classic, then these will often need to be replaced with the front suspension. Ball joints tend to wear out both over time and over a lot of use. If you are disassembling or having your restoration shop disassembling the front or rear suspension, then you should always have this component replaced, even if it looks like it is in decent condition.
  • Piston rings. We get a lot of engine rebuilds here at Custom & Hot Rods of Andice and a lot of the components can be cleaned up and returned to the engine where they'll enjoy many more years of use. However, piston rings are one type of thing that should never be reused. Any engine rebuild or restoration project that makes it so that piston rings are accessible should include their replacement. Not doing so can cause big issues with engine compression and performance.
